What Is Elegance?

During the 2014 Berlin Design Week, guests from the worlds of politics, science, economics, arts, and design met to deal with the volatile concept of elegance. The conference was hosted by the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin (KPM) and organized by the Senatsverwaltung für Wirtschaft, Technologie und Forschung in collaboration with Berlin Partner. TRIAD Berlin initiated and produced the event together with curators Axel Kufus, Hannes Böhringer, and Hans Hansen.

Elegance can have a powerful impact. But what do we perceive as "elegance"? And how does it influence us? Where does elegance dwell, where do we tolerate it, and where do we reject it? And: What lessons could Berlin learn from elegance? The conference featured inspiring speeches by international experts, spontaneous comments, discussions, video contributions, and performances. One topic led to the next, with smooth transitions between the individual formats.

The unusual mix of themed presentations revealed unexpected insights on the topic of “elegance”. Stimuli for discussion were hence provided by Olga Holtz, Professor of Mathematics, Charles Didier Gondola, Professor of African History, and Daniel Memmert, Professor  of Cognitive and Team/ Racket Sport Research.
