“Chance: Risk” – The Exhibition

Münchener Rück Insurance asked Triad Berlin to develop a concept for an exhibition with the subject of risk culture at the Haus der Kunst museum in Munich. With the motto “Chance: Risk”, the subject was staged in five rooms on an overall area of 1,200 square metres. Chances as well as risks are inherent in life, security, vulnerability, knowledge and action. The exhibition presented and contrasted both sides.

Design of the exhibition

In order to appeal to visitors on different levels, the design of the rooms, wall graphics and exhibits together with projections, sound collages and film clips gave each room a distinctive look. The “Life” room, for instance, included a wall frieze with texts and images about risk statistics. The “Knowledge” room juxtaposed our knowledge to our actions in 19 display cases. Knowledge alone is not the decisive factor – it is the action that counts.

Exhibits

Security – including the deceptive security of new technologies – was explored with the help of two valuable exhibits. The insurance company Lloyd’s of London’s Loss Book showed an original entry of the year 1912, which was reminiscent of the sinking of the Titanic. Furthermore, the Enigma cipher machine was on display, on loan from the Deutsches Museum in Munich. Both exhibits recalled the fact that a false sense of security can lead to careless actions.
