VIP Event: "The Arrival"

On November 8th, 2011, the inauguration of the first natural gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea was celebrated. The ceremony held in Lubmin near Greifswald was attended by high-ranking guests representing politics, industry, and the media, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, French Prime Minister François Fillon, Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte, and EU Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger. Commissioned by the Nord Stream AG, Triad Berlin developed a general concept for the event in relation to both content and design and also took care of its implementation as well as of the production of audio-visual materials presented at the event.

A gas molecule served as symbol for the arrival of the gas and also as leitmotif of all the audio-visual materials that contributed to the atmosphere of the event. The atoms of the molecule stood for shareholders of the Nord Stream AG. Even the architecture at the event location, creating an impressive camp scenery consisting of five dome tents, mirrored this key visual. In the biggest tent, a 25-meter-large 360-degree projection turned the creation of the pipeline into an unforgettable three-dimensional experience.

Event Architecture

To make the invisible product natural gas visible, we developed a key visual for the event in the form of a CH4 molecule. As symbol for the first arrival of natural gas, the molecule was used as a leitmotif for the overall staging of the event. In particular, this communicative core idea was reflected in the architecture at the event location, creating an impressive camp scenery of several geodetic dome tents that occupied a total of 6,500 square meters. Thus the key visual of the CH4 molecule was, enlarged many times, transformed into a three-dimensional sculpture. This landmark caught the eyes of people even when they were far away.

Media Installations

The guests had the opportunity to downright dive into the world of Nord Stream. In the largest tent, a 360-degree projection turned the creation of the pipeline into an unforgettable three-dimensional experience. The audience was taken along to the breathtaking sites and situations of the pipeline’s construction and the installation made them witnesses of the engineering and logistic feats that marked this project as well as giving them an idea of its sheer size. 16 projectors transformed the dome tent with a floor area of 500 square feet into a unique, completely immersive cinema. The core panoramic screen constituted the narrative center and it completely merged with the powerful impressions provided by the surrounding dome. The highlight of the ceremony was the symbolic opening of the gas control valve on the stage by the hands of high-level European politicians.

Photo exhibition

The exhibition documents the 14-months-long building process of the Nord Stream Pipeline.  30 exceptional photos were created by photographer Thomas Eugster while the construction of the 1,224-kilometers-long pipeline string through the Baltic Sea was underway. The photo exhibition was first shown in the context of the opening ceremony of the Nord Stream VIP event on November 7th, 2011, at the Hyatt Hotel in Berlin.
