Thinking of Germany - 20 years later – what is going happen?

After having planned the first “Thinking of Germany” Conference in 2009, this year, Triad Berlin was again responsible for the entire design and architecture of the event, as well as for the planning and production of the entire conference and the following dinner. Moreover, Triad also significantly supported the development of the conference in terms of content and program. The guiding theme of this year’s conference was “20 years later – what is going happen?” This theme was discussed in three panels–on politics, economy, and culture–by high-profile speakers who debated such up-to-date questions and topics like “Do political parties endanger democracy?” or “Arbitrariness and Fundamentalism.” Among those who discussed Germany’s future were Joachim Gauck, Kurt Biedenkopf and Friedrich Merz. Live illustrations visualized the conference topics and Deutschlandradio Kultur broadcast parts of the conference.

Conference Design

The entire design of the conference corresponded with the visual appearance of the conference logo. Like a blue thread, the design was woven through all constructions and communication media. The room-in-room architecture emphasized this theme of interweavement. 20 years after the German re-unification, the architecture of the event visualized the complex and heterogeneous discussion around this historical development by using blue ribbons that were interwoven in various layers inside of huge frames. This spatial element framed two audience grandstands facing each other and helped to create a concentrated and dense atmosphere for discussion. In the same visual language, an exhibition that showed caricatures by artists Greser&Lenz (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) about contemporary German discussions was integrated into the conference space. Satirically and sometimes even viciously, these caricatures dealt with the social, political, cultural, and religious situation from the perspective of both Eastern and Western Germany. A caricature that had been created specifically on the occasion of the conference was the highlight of the exhibition.
