Sustainability on 3500 sqm - Siemens at HMI 2010

On the occasion of Hannover Messe 2010, Triad Berlin developed and realised a trade fair stand of 3500 sqm for Siemens AG. The guiding theme of the stand was “Create Sustainable Value,” and it focused on the solutions Siemens has developed and offers in regard to sustainability. Moreover, this was the first time that a Siemens trade fair stand was evaluated according to ecological criteria; the evaluation will help to locate potential for optimizing future trade fair stands and to develop further strategies for sustainability.

Spatial concept

The space links the central exhibitions areas “energy efficiency” and “productivity” with the area reserved for product presentation and with the division centres, which present particular competencies and solutions from the company’s individual divisions. Two dynamic white communication ribbons with a length of 35 meters wind through these areas and bind them together. They are the defining feature of the stand and attract attention from afar. In the centre of the stand, sustainability – the main theme of the stand – is presented in an emotional way by means of a live moderation that is supported by video technology. This presentation also shows how Siemens supports their customers on the way to economically and ecologically more sustainable modes of production.

Mediatecture

The clear language of these extensive communication ribbons is emphasized by the interaction of LED light surfaces on their inside. From a centrally located 24 meter wide LED screen, content and light effects are transferred to the ribbons. At the end of the 60 meter ribbon, the images are transferred back onto an LED screen and can then be communicated on the peripheral parts of the stand. The visitor dives into the world of Siemens and gets to know the highlights of automation and motor technology.

Sustainability and Ecobalance

For the first time ever, a Siemens trade fair stand was evaluated in regard to ecological criteria. In a cooperation between Triad Berlin and the Department of Sustainable Engineering at Technische Universität Berlin, an ecobalance was developed in order to gather und evaluate data about the stand’s environmental impact throughout its whole life span. This evaluation included an analysis of the individual stages in the stand’s life cycle and of the materials used for its construction. Based on this ecobalance analysis, further potential for optimization and sustainability can now be developed. An important step towards the sustainability of the trade fair stand will be made already this year; the recyclable parts of the Siemens stand will be donated to the skater park Mellowpark, where they will be used to build half pipes.
