The countdown has begun:
On May 1st 2010, the largest world exposition of all times will open its doors. Under the overall motto »Better City, Better Life,« 240 countries and organizations, exhibiting in an area covering altogether 5.4 km², will be expecting a total of 70 million visitors. Commissioned by the Chinese organizing committee of the Shanghai World Expo 2010, the German company Triad has designed one of the main theme pavilions - the »Urban Planet.« Triad had won the international bidding for the 12,000 m² pavilion against more than 150 competitors.
The 12,000 m² »Urban Planet«: 11 million expected visitorsThe »Urban Planet« pavilion addresses both the complex processes shaping the urbanization of our planet and global challenges that go along with it. The scenography combines traditions of Western narratives with motives taken from the Chinese Feng Shui heritage. With a two-part structure, the exhibition focuses on the ambivalent character of cities: On the one hand, they destruct the environment, on the other, they are also places for creating value, prosperity and technological innovations.
Cycle of DestructionAdapting the idea of two cycles of life from Chinese philosophy, the »Urban Planet« consists of a double helix soaring to a height of 14 meters. In the ascending part of the exhibition, a »Road of Crisis« visualizes in fi ve chapters the potential of destruction stemming from urbanization, the threats to our ecological system, and the depletion of our planet’s resources. The visitors are confronted in a compelling fashion with the question of whether they want to go on living like this in the future.
»Blue Planet« - The Eureka MomentAt the highest point of the «Road of Crisis,« a spectacular view on the »Blue Planet« unfolds. Metaphorically speaking, the Earth is telling its own story in scenery involving the whole room. «More than any other pavilion, the ‘Urban Planet’ illustrates that it is imperative for us to rethink our approach on a global scale and with all social groups participating. The pavilion directs our attention to how urgent it is to fi nd concrete, future-oriented solutions for the problems that face megacities. It calls for a personal contribution by each and every individual,« says Lutz Engelke, founder and managing director of Triad Berlin.
»Road of Solutions« – An Advance into the FutureIn the second part of the exhibition, the »Road of Solutions« presents innovative approaches to the global challenges. The spectrum of available options on the path to an ecological transformation of civilization is represented by up to 100 best practice examples in both the national German and the international context, by specific suggestions for acting more environmentally conscious in everyday life, by technological developments, by political initiatives, and by activities in the civil society. The city becomes a catalyst for generating and sharing knowledge and experience in the service of an eco-conscious future.
Green Environmental Technologies – An Advance into the Future
The exhibition concept integrates globally acting companies such as Bosch, DHL, and Daimler, which exemplify the reorientation of industry by way of innovative products and “green” development concepts.
Whereas Bosch is introduced as one of the world’s leading suppliers in the essential sectors of environmental technology, Deutsche Post DHL will present its GoGreen concept. Daimler displays its brands Mercedes-Benz and smart on the route to emission-free mobility and uses the “Pangaea” project to illustrate its efforts in the field of corporate social responsibility.
Deutsche Post DHLDeutsche Post DHL is the world’s leading logistics group and market leader in the Asia-Pacific region.
The company and its 500.000 employees are keenly aware of the fact that this position goes along with a special responsibility to minimize the impact of its operations on the environment and, in addition, to use its core competencies to the benefi t of society. Corporate responsibility is an integral part of the group’s long-term strategy. Deutsche Post DHL has become the fi rst company in the sector of logistics which has set its own goal for climate protection: For every letter or parcel sent, for every container transported and for every square meter used, the company is ready to reduce the respective CO2 emissions by 30 percent until the year 2020 (compared to 2007). All activities in this regard are pooled in the climate protection program GoGreen. This includes, among other things, the carbon management system, GoGreen products for letter and parcel services, the application of “green transport technologies” as well as new concepts for city logistics. They are presented in the “Road of Solutions” exhibition.
“We fully appreciate the special responsibility we have as a logistics company. Deutsche Post DHL has made a conscious decision to invest in green technologies and we wish to inform the visitors what is meant when we talk about sustainable logistics,” says Dr. Christof Ehrhart, Deutsche Post DHL’s Director of Corporate Communications.
Daimler AG in the Urban Planet Pavilion – Urban Mobility of the Future
Daimler AG and the »Road of Solutions« at the Shanghai World Expo: Daimler looks back on an almost 125-year-long tradition in which the quest for solutions, meaning research and development, has always played a key role. Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz invented the automobile. In these times of an accelerated technological progress and new challenges such as climate change, Daimler AG endeavors to invent the automobile anew. The company’s aim is to create the mobility of the future, meaning an emission-free mobility. In the context of the “Road of Solutions” exhibition at the central theme pavilion “Urban Planet”, Daimler displays the smart fortwo electric drive, the Mercedes B-class F-cell, the mobility concept car2go as well as the Mercedes-Benz environmental project “Pangaea”.
smart fortwo electric drive: The series production of the first locally emissions-free, batterypowered car began in late 2009: the smart fortwo electric drive. A 30 kW electric motor operates in the rear of this extremely compact two-seat vehicle. The 120 Newton meters of torque, available right from the start, provide for good acceleration and high agility in urban traffic. The smart fortwo electric drive can be recharged comfortably via any standard domestic socket. The range of a fully-charged battery is around 135 kilometers, making it an ideal city car.
Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL: With more than 100 test vehicles and a combined total of over 4.5 million kilometers of trial testing, Daimler has the world’s largest and best-tested fleet of fuel cell vehicles. Small-scale production of the Mercedes-Benz B-class F-CELL started in late 2009. The first 200 units will be delivered to customers in Europe and the United States this year. Thanks to its great range of about 400 kilometers and short refuelling times of around three minutes, the B Class F-CELL combines local zero-emission mobility with long-distance comfort and compelling performance.
car2go: Daimler uses the setting of the World Expo to present its innovative mobility concept “car2go”, a simple, cost-effective, and environment-friendly solution for traffic congestion in inner cities. The main idea is providing the option to rent smart fortwo cars anywhere and around the clock at low rates (calculated on a per-minute basis).
The car can be pre-booked via mobile phone and internet or rented spontaneously. The invoice is done by means of an innovative telematic unit in the car. The car2go concept makes city driving just as easy as using a mobile phone and is distinct from the classic method of “carsharing”.
Pangaea: The objective of Daimler’s environmental project „Pangaea“ is to raise awareness about the environment, especially among young people. In the context of the “Young Explorer Program”, participants will be given the opportunity to join the Pangaea expedition led by Mike Horn. Travelling on a sailing ship, they will work actively on projects concerning the preservation of natural resources and the improvement of living conditions in developing countries.
»Daimler’s intention is to guarantee individual mobility for future generations by way of providing custom-made automobile and mobility concepts for its whole line-up of products. In this regard, we are already reducing car emissions signifi cantly and we are searching for solutions to eliminate emissions in private and public transportation altogether by means of modern propulsion technologies.
In order to reach this goal, we have pooled our manifold activities, co-operations, and partnerships concerning emission reduction for cars, trucks, busses, and transporters in the company-wide initiative “The Road to Emissions-Free Mobility”. The smart fortwo electric drive, the Mercedes-Benz B-class F-CELL, and the concept ‘car2go” can serve as excellent examples in this regard. At the same time, the efforts of Daimler AG in the
field of environmental protection and sustainability span much further than its own products and mobility concepts as is evidenced by the project ‘Pangaea’,« says Jörg Howe, Head of Communications, Daimler AG.
