Idea and Scenography

The exhibition depicts the interaction between the planet’s dramatic urbanization and the handling of its natural resources. In doing so, traditions of occidental dramaturgy are combined with motives from the Chinese Feng shui heritage. This Taoist philosophy describes the rules determining dynamic processes in the sphere of life.

If the balance of the elements is preserved, this dynamic will progress in harmony. However, if the balance gets lost, it can also unleash destructive forces. Both aspects are reflected in the two-part structure of the exhibition as well as in the overall architecture of the pavilion.

Adapting this idea of the two faces of dynamism, the “Urban Planet” consists of a double helix soaring to a height of 14 meters. Whereas in the first part of the exhibition the ascending “Road of Crisis” visualizes compellingly the destruction of our planet, the descending “Road of Solutions” presents concepts for a better, greener future.
“Road of Crisis”
In the first part of the exhibition, the “Road of Crisis” outlines the threats to our ecosystem and the exploitation of our planet’s resources. In a compelling manner, visitors are confronted with the question of whether we do not need a common effort to stop this kind of destruction. The five chapters of the “Road of Crisis” adapt the Chinese concept of the five elements: water – fire – metal – wood – earth. They are put into a relation with global developments. The “Road of Crisis” visualizes issues such as water shortage, water pollution, the massive burning of fossil fuels as well as the possible consequences in terms of climate change, depletion of our resources of oil, steel or copper, the extinction of species, and, last but not least, the production of non-perishable waste.
Main Scenery: Blue Planet – The Eureka Moment
Having reached the highest point of the “Road of Crisis,” from 12 meters above the ground, visitors will have a unique view of our planet and the pavilion’s main media installation: “Blue Planet.” The visitors experience five spectacular metamorphoses of the hemisphere, which go along with a visible dynamic of change and adaptation. The Earth is now telling its own story.
“Road of Solutions”
In the second part of the exhibition, the “Road of Solutions” presents four possible approaches to the solution of our global challenges: “Low Carbon,” “Urban Mining,” “Drop of Life,” and “Green City.” The spectrum of available options on the path to an ecological transformation of civilization is represented by up to 100 best practice examples in both the national German and the international context, by specific suggestions for acting more environment-conscious in everyday life, by technological developments, political initiatives and resolutions, and by activities in the civil society. The exhibition also integrates globally acting companies such as Bosch, Daimler/smart, and DHL, which exemplify the reorientation of industry by way of innovative products and “green” development concepts. The “Road of Solution” picks up on discussions on renewable energies and measures lowering emissions, on the intelligent recycling of raw materials, on water management, and on the integration of nature in cities. A specifically developed “Guidance System for an Ecological Life” confronts visitors with their own actions and their responsibility for the environment. Each Eco Sign offers individual advice on how to act more eco-conscious in everyday life.
Bionic Forms as Basic Elements of Scenography in the “Road of Solutions”
Three-dimensional sculptures are the dominating design elements in the “Road of Solutions.” With their structures showing both a coolly technoid and a biomorphic structure, they symbolize the amalgamation of nature and technology: Without technology there will be no eco-friendly change. The forms of the three-dimensional sculptures are duplicated in the two-dimensional reliefs, which are used as displays for the content of the respective topics.
“We have only one world“
Reaching the exciting conclusion of the “Road of Solutions,” visitors will find their way into the heart of the “Blue Planet” and experience the history of civilization in a fascinating 360 degree panorama show. The final message “We only have one world” reiterates the crucial point: we urgently need to act – both as a global community and as individuals. Our future lies in the hands of each and every one of us.
