On May 1st 2010, the largest world exposition of all times will open its doors. Under the overall motto “Better City, Better Life,” 240 countries and organizations, exhibiting in an area covering altogether 5.4 km², will be expecting a total of 70 million visitors.
In 2008, for the first time in human history, more people lived in cities than in rural areas. As soon as in the year 2050, 75% of the world’s population will be living in cities. In the mid-20th century, only Greater New York had more than 10 million residents. In contrast, the year 2015 will see more than 60 megacities with populations exceeding the 5 million mark. It is expected that in China alone 450 million more people will leave the countryside in the course of the next thirty years, building their hopes on the cities. The end of urbanization is not in sight.
Apart from the national and international pavilions as well as the company pavilions and a best practice area, the Expo’s general motto “Better City, Better Life” will be addressed in the five theme pavilions “Urban Planet,” “Urban Dwellers,” “Urban Beings,” “Urban Footprints,” and “Urban Dreams.”
